Funmi Falana Personal Life and Education
Funmi Falana is married to Femi Falana, a Nigerian lawyer and activist, and they are the parents of Falz, a Nigerian musician and actor. She attended St. Louis Girls’ Grammar School in Akure, Ondo State, earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Benin, and later completed a law degree (LL.B) at the University of Lagos, where she also obtained her master’s degree (LL.M).

Currently, Funmi Falana is the National Director of Women Empowerment and Legal Aid (WELA), an NGO that focuses on defending women’s and children’s rights. She is affiliated with various professional organizations, including the Nigerian Bar Association, West African Bar Association, International Bar Association, and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
Funmi Falana Leadership and Activism
As National Director of WELA, Funmi Falana is actively involved in activism, particularly on issues like rape, women’s marginalization in politics, and gender-based policies. Her organization successfully challenged Regulation 124 of the Police Act, which restricted female officers from marrying within their first three years of service, a provision that was deemed unconstitutional.
In January 2021, she wrote to the Inspector General of Police requesting the reinstatement of a dismissed police officer who was terminated for being pregnant outside of marriage. She threatened to take legal action if the officer was not reinstated, arguing against Regulation 127 of the Police Act, 2020.
