Winifred Akpani holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of Benin, Benin City. She furthered her education with a Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science from the University of Lagos. She is also a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (FCA) and the Institute of Directors.

Her professional career began in 1987 as a trainee accountant with Oni Lasebikan and Co., now Ernst & Young. She later joined Arthur Andersen & Co. (now KPMG Professional Services), where she became a Chartered Accountant in 1990 and served as an audit senior until 1992.
That same year, Winifred Akpani took on the role of Financial Controller at Flame Petroleum & Gas Company Limited and was promoted to Executive Director in 1997. In 1998, she launched Northwest Petroleum & Gas Company Limited with an initial capital of 200,000 Naira. The company began by supplying diesel in 200-liter drums to households, banks, hotels, and businesses. It has since evolved into a significant player in international oil trading and has expanded into Nigeria’s midstream and upstream oil sectors.
