As a Player
At Western Carolina University, she played for the Western Carolina Catamounts for four years. After college, she joined the D’Tigress, playing in the 2015 Women’s Afrobasket tournament in Cameroon where Nigeria finished third. She also played for Nigeria’s First Bank at the FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women during her playing career.
As a Coach
During her first two years at Manhattan College, Rena Wakama served as the director of women’s basketball operations and became an assistant coach in her third year, focusing on talent development and serving as the team’s academics and community service liaison.
In 2023, she became the first female Head Coach of D’Tigress and led the team to its first competition win since 1966. Under her leadership, Nigeria’s D’Tigress made history at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris by becoming the first African team, male or female, to qualify for the basketball quarterfinals after defeating Canada 79-70.
