Kashim Shettima Biography – Kashim Shettima Mustapha, born September 2, 1966, is a Nigerian politician who currently holds the position of the 15th Vice President of Nigeria. Before his current position, he represented Borno Central as a senator from 2019 to 2023 and served as Governor of Borno State from 2011 to 2019.

Kashim Shettima Early Life And Education
Shettima, was born in Maiduguri in 1966 and graduated from the University of Maiduguri and later the University of Ibadan. He switched to business and banking after his studies, holding several senior leadership roles in banking.
In the mid-2000s, he managed Zenith Bank’s Maiduguri branch before joining President Ali Modu Sheriff’s state cabinet in 2007. After four years as cabinet minister, he was appointed governor in 2011 and won re-election in 2015, observing the intensity marked by the significant Boko Haram insurgency. He stepped down in 2019 and joined the senate. Despite being re-elected to the Senate in 2023, he withdrew as Bola Tinubu’s candidate, with Kaka-Shehu Lawan replacing him as the senatorial candidate.
Shettima attended Lamisula Primary School in Maiduguri from 1972 to 1978. He then went to Government Community Secondary School in Biu, Borno State, from 1978 to 1980. He then transferred to Government at the University of Science in Potiskum, now in Yobe State, where he completed his secondary education in 1983.

In 1993, he switched to banking and joined the (now defunct) Commercial Bank of Africa Limited as an account manager at their Ikeja branch in Lagos State, South-West Nigeria. He remained there until 1997, when he moved to African International Bank Limited as Vice President, eventually advancing to the position of Chairman in 2001.
In the same year, he transferred to Zenith Bank, initially. As chairman of its main branch in Maiduguri. Within Zenith Bank, he rose through the ranks and held positions as General Manager/Branch Manager, Assistant General Manager (AGM)/Zonal Manager (North East), and Vice President/Zonal Manager (North East); before leaving in 2007 to assume the position of Finance Commissioner in Borno State.
Shettima began his career as an Agricultural Economist at the African Commercial Bank in Lagos (1993-1997), then moved to African International Bank Limited in Kaduna, rising from Vice President to President (1997–2001).
He later served as Deputy General Manager/Branch Manager at Zenith Bank’s Maiduguri office, eventually becoming Managing Director in 2006. In mid-2007, he was appointed Commissioner of Borno State Ministry of Finance and Economic Development and subsequently held positions took other ministries under which former Borno Governor Ali Modu Sheriff.

From 2007 to 2011, he held office in five municipalities before being selected as a gubernatorial candidate in the January 2011 ANPP primaries. However, the first candidate, Engineer Modu Fannami Gubio, was brutally assassinated, resulting in his election in the subsequent primary election in February 2011.
He emerged victorious in the April 26 elections in 2011, he received 531,147 votes compared to his opponent’s 450,140 votes. Shettima has been honored with several awards, including the 2014 and 2015 Government Awards from various prestigious sources. In February 2019, he won the Borno Central Senatorial District election, succeeding Senator Babakaka Bashir.
Bola Tinubu was declared candidate for the presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission on March 1, 2023. As a result, Shettima became the elected vice president of Nigeria. Their inauguration took place on May 29, 2023.
Shettima officially assumed his position as Vice President after being sworn in at Eagle Square, Abuja, on the same day. In his role as Vice President, he is responsible for overseeing the Economic Planning Committee and providing information and advice to the President, who ultimately makes the final decisions.
