Ibukun Awosika Early Life And Education
Ibukun Awosika, the third of seven children, was born in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. She received her primary education at St. Paul’s African Church Primary School in Lagos and completed her secondary education at the Methodist Girls’ High School in Yaba. She then went to the University of Ife (now known as Obafemi Awolowo University), where she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry.
Although she originally planned to study Architecture, she also took electives in Mathematics. In addition, she obtained postgraduate and MBA certificates from the Lagos School of Business and the IESE School of Business at the University of Navarre, having done various business programs there.
Ibukun Awosika Career
During her one-year compulsory service with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Kano State, Ibukun Awosika worked as an accounting trainee at Akintola Williams & Co., which later became Deloitte is. Upon completion of her career, she returned home and joined Alibert Nigeria Ltd.; at the furniture manufacturer as showroom manager.
Driven by a desire for independence, she founded her furniture manufacturing company, Que bees Limited, in 1989. This company later evolved into The Chair Center Limited and eventually SOKOA Chair Center Limited was, subsequently, merged with SOKOA S. A and Guaranty Trust in 2004 Warrior.
Ibukun Awosika is recognized as a fellow of the Africa Leadership and Aspen Global Leadership Association. She is a member of the Nigerian Economic Review Group and serves on the Board of Directors of the Economic Forum of Nigeria. Previously, she was president of the Women in Management, Business and Public Service. In 2011, she co-founded the Post-School Student Development Institute, aimed at addressing Nigeria’s high unemployment rate.
On September 7, 2015, Ibukun made history by becoming the first female Governor of the First Bank of Nigeria, succeeding King Ajibola Afonja. She is also a member of the International Advisory Board (IAB) at IESE and sits on the boards of Digital Jewel Limited and Cadbury Nigeria Plc.
