Dr. Doyin Okupe Career
Despite being a doctor, Okupe is deeply involved in party politics and was once the publisher of a health magazine called Life Mirror. He practiced medicine in both government and private hospitals, including St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos, before founding the Royal Cross Medical Center in Obalende, Lagos, where he served as Executive Director alongside Dr. Seyi Roberts and Dr. Ladi Okuboyejo.
In a July 2019 interview with The Nation (Nigeria), Olusegun Osoba narrated how Okupe and Dr. Seyi Roberts saved the life of his gatekeeper from a gunshot wound to the head on the night of August 23, 1994.
During the Second Republic of Nigeria, Okupe ran for parliament under the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) during the 1983 Nigerian presidential election. He moved to Nigeria’s Third Republic and assumed the position of National Public Relations Secretary to the National Republic of Congo (NRC).
Okupe was part of the NRC delegation that oversaw the compilation of the results of the 1993 Nigerian presidential election at the headquarters of the National Electoral Commission (NEC). However, in 1996, during the military rule of General Sani Abacha, Okupe was arrested and detained.
Following Abacha’s failed transition program in March 1998, Okupe, along with other politicians, was barred from contesting the elections of the Nigerian United Congress Party (UNCP). At the beginning of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, Okupe was appointed Special Assistant to President Olusegun Obasanjo on Media and Public Relations.
In 2002, he contested for the governorship of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, losing heavily to Gbenga Daniel. Later, in 2012, President Good luck Jonathan appointed Okupe as his Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs.
